The plot of the movie follows Pathaan, an exiled RAW agent, who teams up with ISI agent Rubina to take down Jim, a former RAW agent-turned-traitor. Jim plans to spread a deadly lab-generated virus across India at the behest of a Pakistani military general. The film was shot over various locations in India, Afghanistan, Spain, UAE, Turkey, Russia, Italy, and France, with principal photography starting in November 2020 in Mumbai.

The movie features music composed by the duo Vishal-Shekhar, with Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara providing the score. One of the songs, "Besharam Rang," led to protests by right-wing Hindutva groups due to a controversial music video featuring Deepika Padukone in a saffron bikini. However, Central Board of Film Certification cleared the film for exhibition after certain edits were made to   song sequence.

The film was made on an estimated production budget of ₹225 crore (US$28 million), with an additional ₹15 crore (US$1.9 million) spent on print and advertising. Interestingly, pre-release publicity was limited, with no media interactions or public events held prior to the movie's release.

The movie has received mixed reviews from audiences and critics alike. Some praised the movie for its action sequences and performances by the cast, while others criticized the plot and pacing. However, it has still managed to do well at the box office, grossing over ₹250 crore (US$33 million) within the first few weeks of its release.

In 2019, the Indian government removed a special status for the region of Jammu and Kashmir, which upset a Pakistani army general named Qadir, who wanted to seek revenge against India. He hired a private terrorist group led by a man named Jim to carry out an attack, but a team of former Indian intelligence agents, led by a man named Pathaan, worked to stop them.

During their mission, they learned that Jim was actually a former Indian agent who had faked his own death and was seeking revenge against his former agency. They also discovered that Jim was planning to release a deadly virus in India. With the help of a former Pakistani agent, they managed to recover one of the virus-containing orbs, but Jim escaped with the other one.

Jim threatened to release the virus unless the Indian military withdrew from the region of Kashmir. Pathaan and his team worked to locate and disarm the missile containing the virus. After a series of confrontations and fights, they managed to stop Jim and save India from a catastrophic attack.

In the end, Pathaan was reinstated as the head of the intelligence agency's special operations team, and he and his partner Tiger continued to protect their country from threats.
